Iris van de Gun
Entrepreneurship & Innovate
I am Iris van der Gun and I come from the Netherlands. I am 18 years old and I love spending time with my family, friends and animals. I have two horses, with one horse I give lessons to children and with the other horse I participate with jumping, cross and dressage competitions. I am a type who is not easily afraid of something and I like a challenge.
I study Business & Agriculture at the Van Hall Larenstein in Leeuwarden (Netherlands). For my education I have to do an internship abroad for 16 weeks, I do my internship at Formosa Horticulture in Puli (Taiwan). At this company I am investigating the possibilities of shortening their supply chain
Last year I had a module at my school where we had to bring a new product onto the market by ourselves. Together with three other classmates, we designed and marketed the book ‘De Witte Motor’. The book is made for children who are above 8 years old and it tells everything about the farmer, the cow and the milk. It also contains fun facts, (self-made) photos and recipes. It was a big success. A total of 200 booklets have been sold and we were nominated for the VHL and the LC Awards. We have created a lot of brand awareness with those nominations.
Besides my school I also work part-time. I milk 130 cows on my own about three times a week. And in the summer months I also work at a potato farm which develop new varieties of potatoes. At both companies it means that I have to work a lot with my hands, but that is not a problem for me.
In addition to school and work, I am also one of the organizers of an annual event: Pumpkin weekend. Annually about 4000 people come to visit this event. This event is a market where a lot of pumpkins are for sale and there are around 75 stands selling local products. I have my own department: edible pumpkins. I have to arrange everything by myself, from purchasing to selling.
In the Netherlands we are constantly working on entrepreneurship & Innovation. On Saturday, April 18 (2020), I will share my experiences and show how we work and study in the Netherlands.
